May 10: 10th Anniversary in NYC
As I mentioned in my last post, Cyndi and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary this past weekend with a trip to New York City.
Short version of the story: The trip was great; we love NYC; Too Much Joy is the best band ever; our hotel could've been a little quieter.
Long version:
We really love NYC. If we didn't have kids, we'd probably move there. We drove up on Thursday. Traffic was pretty good and we made good time. Thursday night we just walked around Time Square and got some great pizza. We debated going up The Empire State Building, but decided against it.
We stayed at the Bryant Park Hotel which is super fancy and famous and stuff. The room was positively huge with two massive windows overlooking Bryant Park and the Public Library. These windows had big cushioned windowsills so you could sit in them and watch the people on the street and at the park. The windows were awesome. Sadly, they apparently were made of tissue-thin glass; they let in a lot of street noise. The hotel provided earplugs which helped considerably.
Neither of us can remember much of what we did on Friday. We know that we ate at a cool little diner (great cheesesteak!), but we can't remember what we did between lunch and the party.
The party was for Too Much Joy's drummer Tommy's retirement from the NYPD (20 years as a cop!). The band got together for their first show in 10 years to celebrate and we got invited to the pre-show party (I'm their webmaster). It was incredibly cool. We got to meet all the band members and hung out with both Sandy (the original bassist) and Tim (the lead singer) and his wife and daughter.
After the party, we headed down to the club for the concert. They were incredible. It was as if they hadn't had a 10-year hiatus from playing together; it was like we had just seen them a couple months ago. After the show, we hung around the club for a while and talked to some of the band and Tim's wife and daughter some more. We finally got out of the club around 2 a.m.
We took a cab back to the hotel. Along the way, another cab basically tried to run us off the road, swerving across three lanes in the process. Our cabbie pulled up next to him and they started yelling back and forth. Apparently, the other cabbie thought ours was going too fast and was trying to slow him down. It was all quite exciting. Many racial insults were hurled by both sides (our guy was black; the other guy Indian).
When we got back to the hotel, we were exhausted, but starving. So, we ordered some absurdly overpriced pizzas from room service and watched TV until they came.
We slept in later on Saturday. We just walked around for a while, got lunch and then went to the Museum of Modern Art, probalby the coolest museum I've ever been to. We spent several hours there before heading out. We stopped by the MoMA store, but were disappointed, and then went to the Museum of Art and Design across the street. When we went to NYC a couple years ago (last year?) to see Spamalot, my friend Sterling and I went here and saw a great glass exhibit. This time the exhibit was "Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting". It was quite weird.
We had a fancy italian dinner that night followed by some excellent ice cream. Afterwards, we walked around a while and again debated going up the Empire State Building. This time, however, we decided against it when we saw the line.
Sunday, we went looking for a street fair that we went to last time we were in NYC, but it didn't appear to be happening, so we grabbed a quick breakfast, checked out of the hotel and went home.
All in all, a great trip.

I really want to visit NYC. I think I would like to live there for a year or two just to experience the city fully. I have a few friends that think I'm crazy. It'll probably never happen because of cost-of-living, but it's a nice dream. You two sound like you had a wonderful time.
glad to hear that you all had a good time. i hope to go there sometime this year. i've only been there a couple of times and i constantly think about visiting. i don't think i could live there, though.
Radical lace and subversive knitting???? That would have been a very interesting exhibit! I'm having a hard time imagining how knitting can be subversive - and I have a pretty active imagination!

I loved living so close to Manhattan the year I was a nanny. I'd spend whole Saturdays in Central Park. I saw as many shows as I could afford. I ate. And ate. Aaahhh, I ate such wonderful food! Sigh.

It was pretty cool. Mainly, it was subvervsive/radical in that it reinterpretting or reinventing knitting and lace more than subversive like an anarchist group or something.
The last time I went to the Museum of Art and Design I thought that I needed to start finding these types of museums and galleries here in DC, but I never got around to it. I've started looking now.
I've been to NYC once for three days and I loved it. I'm like Booklogged. I think a year would give me time to really get the full experience.
