Dec 11: Moving: Settlement on the new house
Settlement on the new house was scheduled for 5 p.m. on November 30th. Due to the idiocy of the buyers of our old house, however, it got bumped to the next morning. The sellers drove up from North Carolina, so they just went ahead and signed all the papers on the 30th. We went in the morning of December 1st and did our part. It was relatively painless: about 45 minutes total.
Afterwards, we walked out relieved. It was over! We were done! We didn't have to deal with the dumb buyers or the dumb sellers anymore. We went and had a celebratory breakfast at IHOP. Next up: the first few days in the new house Dec 8: 200k!
Sorry, I haven't had time to write any more moving entries. In the meantime, check this out:
That's the odometer of my car. I knew it was going to roll over 200,000 today, but I missed it. I forgot to keep my eye on it. It was just rolling over 200,002 when I got to work. I always miss the cool odometer rolling over moments in life. For Nicole and Jeff: I took this picture of a whiteboard at Five Guys for you. It didn't turn out very well, but if you click on it and view the bigger image, you should be able to make it out: Dec 5: Moving: Moving our stuff into the new house
Here begins the full report that I promised in the previous entry.
The sellers let us get into the new house starting the day after Thanksgiving. Before we could get in, though, we had to do our final walkthrough and have all the utilities transferred into our name. Cyndi called the utils on Wednesday and we did the walkthrough Friday morning. We ended up getting a moving van for free. These realtors have this moving van and it's available just for the asking. It's about the size of a smaller U-haul and was way better than moving our stuff using our van, which would've taken forever. Around 10, my dad and brother show up to help and a friend showed up a while later. We did two full loads in the truck which took care of all the big furniture and all of the boxes we had already packed. We had decided to stay in the house until settlement and just live with almost no furniture and mattresses on the floor. So, after the two truck-loads, we thought we were in pretty good shape to be able to get out quickly when settlement came around. We were completely wrong. After two days of living in an empty house, we'd had enough. So, we decided to stay at my parents' house until we had the new house and go ahead and move the rest of the stuff ahead of time. We thought we had two or three van-loads of stuff. Again, we were completely wrong. Cyndi's sister Nicole came down to help on Saturday, but we didn't do too much actual moving due to this mistaken idea of near-completedness. Nicole kept saying that we should be doing more, but we didn't. Nicole was right. We did five van-loads on Monday and then at least two more on Tuesday. It was awful. Every time we thought we were nearing the end we'd realize we had forgotten something. We eventually decided to start focusing on one room at a time so that we'd at least get some sense of accomplishment and be able to see some progress. We were finally moved out completely by Tuesday night. Cyndi and my mom went over on Wednesday to finish the cleaning. Next up: Settlement on the old house Dec 1: Moving: Finally, it's done.
We settled on our existing house yesterday and on our new house this morning. It's done; we own our new house. Full report to follow when I have time.
