They're saying GigE is too slow? What do they want? TeraE? Maybe FiberE? Perhaps SomeOtherEI'veNeverHeardOfE?
Also, "unholy" is a fantastic adjective, which is not used nearly enough. I plan to do my best to remedy that.
They specifically mention infiniband, which I think is fiber. For real heavy duty clusters, I think fiber is the standard. I think they're basically saying that if you're throwing a ton of data to and fro, the faster interconnect you use, the better. It'd probably add a bunch to the cost, though.
Actually, from the wikipedia article on infiniband, it seems as if it's not fiber-based:
